Joan Rapoport

Joan Rapoport is a working potter who creates her stoneware, porcelain and raku work in her studios in Chicago and Winnetka, Illinois. She is a member of and exhibitor at the ARTISANS 21 co-operative gallery in Hyde Park's Harper Court in Chicago.

Joan has studied ceramics at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, the College of Marin, and various professional workshops. For the past 35 years, she has worked in stoneware, porcelain, raku and sawdust-firing at her own studios in California and the Chicago area. During the eight years prior to her return to Chicago, she directed the ceramics department at The Village, an alternative learning center in Van Nuys, California. She also taught at studios, municipal and private art centers and city colleges, and gave workshops at studios, schools and for many community organizations.

Joan's functional ware--which ranges from full place settings to quiche dishes, tea sets, and a wide range of other work--is light, attractive and intended to be an enjoyable part of the user's daily routine. In her raku pieces--mostly vases--she incorporates select natural flora to highlight and complement their function. She does private commissions and exhibits regularly at galleries, shops and her home.
